CNN —Crews are working to remove the first portion of Baltimore bridge wreckage – the starting point in a complicated, extensive cleanup process that could help open up a temporary channel to get more vessels into the water around the collapse site, officials said. In the meantime, conditions in the water make it unsafe for divers as pieces of the bridge remain submerged in the water. The port “handles more cars and more farm equipment more than any other port inside this country,” the governor said. Plus, “at least 8,000 workers on the docks have jobs that have been directly affected” by the collapse. In order to reopen the port, the Coast Guard says it will first clear debris from the deep draft channel, remove the ship, then clear debris from the bridge across the waterway.

CNN —Surfing is about to experience a seismic change in 2024 as two of the standard-bearers of the sport are stepping away from the board and waves. Eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore is taking a break from competitive surfing – for a year, at least. Australian Gilmore, widely regarded as the greatest female surfer of all time, announced that she won’t be competing in the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour season, instead focusing on enjoying other things in life. Now, fighting and preventing wildfires and helping the island of Maui recover from the flames top the agenda as Hawaii's Legislature returns for a new session this week. The Senate majority said in a news release it was committed to forming a fire risk task force and seeking permanent funding for the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, which is a hub for wildfire prevention and mitigation. Josh Green, a Democrat, in December asked lawmakers to appropriate $425 million for the Maui cleanup and emergency housing, and millions more to reduce statewide wildfire risk. Nakamura said the Maui fires exacerbated a problem that existed long before: the proliferation of vacation rentals around the state. “If they can’t find an affordable rental and use their skills in Hawaii, then we all lose out,” she said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles man who was already arrested in another shooting investigation has been identified as the suspect in three recent killings of homeless men, police said Saturday. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said 33-year-old Jerrid Joseph Powell was identified as the suspect in the three killings after authorities determined a firearm found in the vehicle he was driving when he was arrested earlier was linked to the shootings. Powell was arrested this week by Los Angeles sheriff's deputies for investigation of the shooting death and robbery of a 42-year-old man after he returned to his home. Jose Bolanos, 37, was found dead with a gunshot wound around 3 a.m. on Nov. 26 in an alley in South Los Angeles, police said. It was not immediately possible to identify an attorney for Powell, who is due to appear in court Monday.

CNN —Officials in Los Angeles are asking for the public’s help to find a suspect believed to be targeting the homeless community after three unhoused people were fatally shot in their sleep this week. The killings happened in various locations in the city, including one near Skid Row, an area of downtown Los Angeles known for its large homeless population. The Los Angeles Police Department shared a map of the three locations where three unhoused men were recently killed. “Seek shelter, seek services, stay together, seek support.”Bass called the news “devastating” to the city, which is home to one of the largest unhoused populations in the country. The Los Angeles Police Department has summoned a task force to work on the case.
